In all honesty, it really doesn't matter what you major in to become a doctor—you can do whatever you want to do, so I say, study what you enjoy or what most interests you. I think this is a subject that we've all wondered about. You making the decision you want to be a doctor does not restrict you to a certain major, yet you would still need to minor in sciences or take them at your own time because you need to take specific classes to even be considered for medical schools.

However, as long as you are meeting the requirements for the school you are interested in, I do not see any limits on your education. It is always a good idea to do some research before choosing a major that will be the most suitable for you. Of course, you may see some sites that claim that certain majors will increase your qualification to become a doctor, so if that is something you want to take into consideration, I say go ahead.

You should select a major that matches your interests, passions, and talents while also providing you with suitable challenges. Many students chose to major in a science, owing to the fact that persons interested in health professions are often interested in the sciences. Give yourself a head start by looking at my list down below.

  • List 10 things you love

  • Use the Roadmap to Careers Connect your interests to majors and careers, and explore video interviews with professionals in different industries to hear how they got where they are today.

  • Ask yourself what are your career goals? and make a pros and cons list

  • It’s okay to enter college as an undecided major. Choosing a major doesn't require you to know what you want to major in or even what you want to do with the rest of your life. You can enroll in classes at college that you believe you'll like or even ones that you've never taken before.

Looking at me for example, I am not like other pre-med students. I'm a news media major with a biology minor. When I originally started out as a biology major, I quickly realized that there were other subjects I was interested in exploring and that I didn't want to limit myself to only those. At that point, I began researching these other topics and discovered the news media. I believed it to be the ideal fit for me given my passion for communication. I picked this degree because it allows me to express my creativity in a field other than physics and since communication and journalism are my areas of greatest interest I chose a major that best represents that. I love science, but I also enjoy that I can express myself in fields other than medicine, and news media gives me that opportunity.

According to application data, no major is given precedence over another. Meaning DO WHAT YOU WANT TO DO! You should pick a major that compliments your unique interests and skills.
